Last year Invetus Pty Ltd acquired the NZ-based Estendart Ltd to form the largest Australasian veterinary contract research organisation (CRO) with sites throughout Australia and NZ. Invetus provides a comprehensive range of research services for generating high quality data to support the development of new pharmaceuticals and vaccines. Invetus customers include animal and human health companies, biotech companies, veterinarians, governments, statutory bodies and industry groups. Invetus has three research sites; two in NSW located at Armidale and Wongaburra, and one in Palmerston North – the Estendart Research Centre (ERC). Services typically target improvements in health, welfare and productivity of animals. However an increasing focus is on preclinical trials – safety/toxicology studies for human medicines. All three Invetus sites are GLP accredited so that trial data and final reports can be submitted to regulatory authorities worldwide.
Wongaburra Research Centre has large colonies of dogs and cats for carrying out a variety of trials for pharmaceutical research. The Armidale and Estendart research centres are both situated on university campuses and focus on production animal research. Additionally, the Estendart Research Centre undertakes preclinical studies involving laboratory animals. ERC has the added advantage of having close links with academic staff and resources in the Veterinary School at Massey.
